W1179 Halifax B.II 158 Squadron, RAF NP-S RAF East Moor

 

This Halifax took off at 23.43 hrs from RAF East Moor on July 19, 1942, for an operation against Vegesack. The aircraft however was intercepted and attacked by a night fighter. W1179 crashed into the Waddenzee between the Frisian mainland and Terschelling. There were no survivors. Six bodies were recovered from the water and taken for burial in various Frisian and Dutch cemeteries. Sgt John Robertson Rennie (22) was buried here in the Algemene Begraafplaats.

Sgt Douglas George Jillings (24), W1179's flight engineer was buried in the Algemene Begraafplaats at West Terschelling. F/S William McIntyre McLachlin, RCAF (20) rests in St Jacobiparochie; Sgt James Keith Paton, RAAF (34) and P/O Horace James Skelly (20) both rest in the Algemene Begraafplaats in Harlingen. Sgt Roland Jack Smith (28) was buried in the cemetery at Den Burg on Texel Island.

Sgt Frederick Henry George Simkins (32) has no known grave and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
